Character Generation: Classes of Athas
For Chaos Out of Order I have decided to allow both the Dragon Magazine Issue #319 and The Burnt World of Athas Dark Sun campaign setting classes. This does mean that some classes have two different options. Those classes will be treated like specialist wizards or psions, thus no character will be allowed to have levels in both versions of a particular class. Class features also cannot be mixed, thus a wizard which uses Sleight of Hand to disguise verbal and somantic spell components must use the FAMILIARS ON ATHAS table on page 36 of Dragon Magazine Issue #319, while a wizard which uses Bluff to disguise verbal and somantic components must use the Athasian Familiars table on page 43 of The Burnt World of Athas Dark Sun 3.5 document.

If players want a base class outside of these, it will require my approval. For instance, the Erudite bass class from Dragon Magazine Issue #319 was first developed within the ranks of The Order, in much the same way as the Elan race was. Any such approved classes will be posted in this thread.

The same applies for any and all prestige classes. Even the ones on The Burnt World of Athas need approval first, because the site uses the campaign world 286 years prior to where my campaign is set. For instance, the Dune Trader class refers to specific merchant houses which may or may not still be the same after 300 years. After all, House Klethira has survived its near extinction at the hands of House Stel…

Some classes suffer changes from the rules in order to better fit my vision of Dark Sun. They are:
Rangers, both versions, obtain their spells from the Spirit of the Land, just as Druids.
Paladins obtain their spells from Avangions who open a conduit to the elemental planes. Avangions can grant or deny Paladins access to spells with a simple ritual, but are not aware of which spells a particular Paladin is preparing nor can they directly control how energy passing through the conduit is used.
So that is the basics behind your class options for Chaos Out of Order. Any questions or comments?

After mentioning the Aristrocrat and Expert classes in this forum, Zed asked me about the Adept class. That’s when I realised I had not clarified which NPC classes Chaos Out of Order uses.

We use all DMG NPC classes except the Adept (Aristrocrat, Commoner, Expert, and Warrior). The Adept is replaced by the Psychic Adept from The Burnt World of Athas.

Rats, I think Raele should definitely be able to crossclass in Commoner…

He can if he wishes. I haven’t said anything about not letting PCs take NPC classes. It’s just suggested that they don’t because most NPC classes are not of an equivalent power level to PC classes.
